Hematology Specialist/Stat Lab Lead

Overview

Antech Diagnostics, the largest exclusively commercial veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the nation, is in search of a Hematology Specialist working out of our Hawaii Laboratory and reporting directly to the Manager.

 

As part of the VCA Family, which operates the largest network of freestanding, full-service animal hospitals in the nation, Antech Diagnostics delivers state of the art testing and consulting services to practicing veterinarians.  Our diagnostic spectrum of tests in the areas of chemistry, pathology, endocrinology, serology, hematology, and microbiology enhance veterinarians’ ability to detect, diagnose, evaluate and prevent disease and other conditions affecting animals.

Responsibilities

  • Read a minimum of 70 CBC slides per hour utilizing Cellavision
  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and hematology procedures and equipment 
  • Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment 
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex hematology tasks to learn through experience  
  • Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments 
  • Applies job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks
  • Participate in all departmental training programs
  • Responsible for reconciling all unsigned files in the database and communicating back to the originating labs with the follow up items that need to be completed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelors of Science in Biology or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with 2 years’ experience reading abnormal differentials in high volume operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours
  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lb.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person
  • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
  • Fluency in the English language
  • Extended hours may be needed

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present
  • Use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards
  • A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision
